Showgirls and Talent dance troupe

Director Jenny Rocha will be leading The Painted Ladies Summer Workshop: a performance lab and repertory class. Students will have the opportunity to explore Rocha’s versatile movement styles and techniques that are used in her robust body of work. Participants will also explore physicality and its deep connection to character play while working on satire, vaudeville, social commentary and neo-burlesque. Dance styles include modern, contemporary jazz, body percussion, hip hop and partnering. Join Rocha’s creative process and learn some of her signature acts and repertory!

At the culmination of the workshop, Jenny will hold an audition for The Painted Ladies. She is looking to add dancers to her roster for potential gigs in the fall/winter and a possible future position in the core group.

Jenny Rocha is a choreographer, producer, costume designer, performer and teaching artist. Currently, Jenny is the artistic director of Rocha Dance Theater and The Painted Ladies, her cabaret group that was admitted into the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. In addition to producing formal theater shows, she has also produced nightlife events at many venues including Galapagos Art Space, Slipper Room, Le Poisson Rouge, The Hall at MP, Public Assembly, Littlefield, Public Arts, DROM, Symphony Space and others. She has been a teaching artist at The Brooklyn Academy of Music for 7 years and is on the guest faculty at Mark Morris Dance Center.  She has taught at universities and colleges, including Roger Williams University, Connecticut College, West Virginia University, Rhode Island College, and Lehman College. This year, The US Embassy in Lisbon awarded her an Innovation Grant to perform her work Battledress in Azores, Portugal. Most recently, she received the CUNY Dance Initiative 2018-19 for a residency and performance at John Jay College’s Gerald Lynch Theater.

The Painted Ladies was founded in 2006 by director and choreographer Jenny Rocha. The troupe won both Best Large Group & Most Innovative at The Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas in 2015. Known as “fly girls for thinking people” these ladies perform high energy, vaudeville-like acts that fuse dance with physical comedy, theater and burlesque. Their comedic social commentary, covering themes such as commodification, gender stereotypes, and first world insecurities, draw upon late 19th century burlesque and early 20th century vaudeville styles to create a neo-burlesque sensibility that is at once sexy and intellectual. You may have seen them at the former Galapagos Art Space where they were the longtime resident dance company and cornerstone of its Floating Kabarette for 6 years. Since then, they have been continuously performing at variety shows, private events and nightlife.

(about Jenny Rocha/The Painted Ladies) “This may be one of the best burlesque acts of recent memory. It has everything: a clear story, humor, great musical choices perfectly blended, incredible choreography, exactingly executed, politics, and of course, a group of super-hot ladies.” – J.D. Oxblood, Burlequebeat.com
